Find out what Melbourne has on offer this April.

The month of April in Melbourne is quite the creative one! This month there are a variety of exhibitions taking place that everyone can enjoy. From galleries to the streets, the city will be buzzing with creative energy. April is the last month for you to take advantage of some of these activities and exhibitions so be sure to check your calendars and see what you can squeeze in!

Bark Ladies Aboriginal Art

Situated in the National Gallery of Victoria, Bark Ladies is a free exhibition and a collection of art created by Indigenous Yolngu women. The artworks have come from Northeast Arnhem Land, specifically the Buku Larrangay Mulka Centre. This art centre is run by the community of Yirrikala

The works are part of the growing collection that the National Gallery of Victoria has acquired over the past 20 years. The medium on which the works are painted is either bark or painted hollow poles called larrakitj. The works tell a story and the exhibition is a beautiful way of bringing together the communities of Yirrkala and Melbourne.

Running 22 Dec 2021 – 25 April 2022 10am – 5pm

Makers Market at the District

Experience and enjoy the creative talents of the Melbourne community at the Makers Market! Not only are there stalls featuring homewares, jewellery, fashion, art, and produce that is homegrown with love, there is also live entertainment.

The market is a lovely spot to bring the family (pets included) for a nice Sunday out. Come along and support local small businesses as well as emerging creatives.

Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifest

Make a day of visiting the National Gallery of Victoria and follow up Bark Ladies with this fashion exhibition. This exhibition is the first of its kind in Australia and its sole focus is on Gabrielle Chanel’s contribution to the fashion culture of the 20th Century.

The exhibition features pieces from Chanel’s heritage departments and from other museums and private collections alike. The exhibition has been curated by Miren Arzalluz and Veronique Belloir, who work at the Palais Galliera, located in Paris, in the collections department.

The fashion manifesto shows in-depth Gabrielle Chanel’s designs as well as pieces that were brought to life. Fashion and creativity lovers will get the most out of this but it is a beautiful exhibition to witness nonetheless.
